Volleyball Rules and Refereeing

Volleyball: Description and Rules

The best web description of volleyball is the Wikipedia entry. The current FIVB rules, casebook and referee guidelines are also available for download. The European Referee Seminar 2005 discussed some of the latest interpretations and issues, including the FIVB proposal to limit referees to maximum body mass index of 30.

If you want to become an EVA-qualified referee, see Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Nigel & Steve debate refereeing courses - are they a Good Thing? and Neil's report on his refereeing course, and check Diary Dates or EVA referee course search for course details.

Volleyball: Rules - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This volleyball rules list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) is derived from questions I have been asked recently at club sessions and matches (not just at Aylesbury Vale).

  • Why did the ref ask me whether I was OK to share the net for the warm-up? Referee was not applying the latest instructions to assume a shared net for the warm-up by default - it is now up to a captain to explicitly request separate time at the net if this is desired.
  • Why was that player penalised for tying his shoelace? Referee was zealously applying the international refereeing guidelines: the player attempted to delay the game by asking the referee to wait whilst he tied the lace.
  • Why didn't the ref make that player go on court via the substitution zone between the attack line and the net? The player was the libero and may go on court along any part of the attack line.
  • Why was I prevented from seeing the score? You were a substitute and have to sit on the bench if you are not in the designated warm-up area.
  • Why were you allowed to see the score? I am the coach and am allowed to stand up at the side of the court between the attack line and the baseline (although there is a proposal being tested that I should not get too close to the court).

Volleyball: The Art of Refereeing
