Aylesbury Vale Volleyball Club

Volleyball Coaching

Nigel, Coach At Vale we welcome both recreational volleyballers and those who want to play competitively in leagues. During the indoor season we have divided club night into two, with training for the first hour followed by recreational play for the second. Training consists of warm-up, stretching, individual ball skills and game situations, but no conditioning.

Coaching Objectives 2005/2006 Season

  • Make playing volleyball more fun for everyone in the club
  • Get more out of training by warming up and stretching first
  • Play the same way throughout the club
  • Serving: reliable 100% overarm service for everyone, with a stronger version to pressurise the opposition
  • Digging: reliable service and spike reception, digging to the setter
  • Setting: setter to dictate the attack and be able to set different tempi to the middle, outside, reverse and backcourt
  • Spiking: outside hitters to hit cross-court, down the line and dump; middle hitters to hit halves and shorts; setters to hit reverses; be alert to spiking opportunities on backcourt
  • Defending: either block or cover: don't just stand there watching
  • Blocking: actually block, with 2 blockers together on wing hits and hands penetrating above the net; concentrate on blocking the diagonal wing hit
  • Cover: keep low ready to dig the ball, learn wing cover; close cover must get the short dumps whilst middle back covers the deep corner

These have changed slightly from the coaching objectives for the 2004/2005 season and build on those basics.
