Match Report: Harriers Jets (St Albans), Home 6th November 2005

Aylesbury Vale Volleyball Club completed an early season double over Harriers Jets of St Albans with a 3-1 (25-18, 26-24, 10-25, 25-23) home win at Halton in the Herts League. Setter/hitter Nicolas Lasbistes again starred as Vale's most valuable player but this win was due to an all-round team effort. Captain Chris Seal top-scored with 16 points with fellow wing hitter Paul Clarke close behind on 15.

Recent training paid off as Vale settled into their new service receive formation and allowed playmaker setter Sara Clark to vary the attack using back court options including Lasbistes. Vale took the first game comfortably 25-18 and gave Annette Ellis her Herts League debut in the second which was duly won 26-24. As Vale rotated their squad again, Jets' star hitter came alive, hitting powerfully over the Vale block and beating the back court defence. Vale quickly capitulated in a 10-25 loss. With their starting six back on, Vale took an early lead in the fourth with captain Chris Seal just missing a hatrick of service aces. The game see-sawed as Vale's improved block and defence worked together to neutralise the Jets' attacking threat. The game looked over as Jem Clark's fourth ace of the match was followed by a 3-man stuff block on Jets' main hitter, and then a Paul Clarke kill. But a service error on match point let Jets back in until Nicolas Lasbistes fittingly closed out the game 25-23 and the match 3-1 with a deft one-handed reverse dump into a gaping hole in Jets' defensive cover.
